Evensong with the Hereford Cathedral Choir

The Monastic Webmaster • January 6, 2019

Coming up this week, as we approach the Week of Prayer for Christian unity, we have a special visit to Belmont of the Hereford Cathedral Choir

On Sunday 13th January we welcome the Hereford Cathedral Choir to sing Evensong in the Abbey Church at 4pm. They will be joined by visitors from the Hereford Cathedral Foundation. The Dean of Hereford Cathedral, Michael Tavinor will preach.

Everyone is welcome, so please join us. What a fantastic way of praying for Christian Unity and preparing for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that begins on 18th January.

The choir of Hereford Cathedral made history in Rome last year, when as an Anglican choir they sang at a Papal Mass on the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul, 29th of June with Pope Francis presiding. The Bishop of Hereford invited the Sistine Chapel Choir to Hereford.

On that occasion, Dean Michael said: ‘We think we’re part of history. We felt today that we were playing our small part for the cause of Christian unity. Those choirboys will be telling their grandchildren about the day they came to Rome and sang for the Pope. It will always be with them. It will be with us all.’

Eternal Father,
we praise you for sending your Son
to be one of us and to save us.

Look upon your people with mercy,
for we are divided in so many ways,
and give us the Spirit of Jesus to make us one in love.

We ask this gift, loving Father,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Good Shepherd, Good Priest “I will seek the lost and bring back the strayed; I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak.” Those words, spoken by the Lord God through the prophet Ezekiel, describe the heart of God, the Good Shepherd — but they also describe the life and ministry of a good monk and priest. They could well be written of Fr Stephen’s years of service as a pastor in Abergavenny, Swansea, Hereford, and Weobley. In each of those places, he shared in the Shepherd’s work: seeking out the lost, binding up the wounded, strengthening the weary, and leading God’s people with quiet faithfulness. And like Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who came close to his people, Fr Stephen did not serve from a distance. He knew his people; he was among them. He shared their sorrows and their joys, their hopes and their disappointments. He bore their burdens with prayer and patience he brought the joy of the Gospel and the grace of the Sacraments. His mission amongst us is complete. He has served God’s good purpose. So today we ask Christ the Good Shepherd to take Stephen on his sacred shoulders and carry him home to the house of the Father. Bind up his wounds, give him eternal rest and lead him at last to the green pastures and still waters of eternal life.
