A Chance for Change?

Pope Francis’ vision for humanity

in the wake of the pandemic

ONLINE  Saturday 8th August from 10.15am

At the beginning of this Coronavirus crisis, Austen Ivereigh was in the unique position to interview Pope Francis and learn from him directly how he understood it as a potential moment of creativity and conversion for the Church.

He will look at Pope Francis’s vision for humanity in the wake of the pandemic: his spiritual leadership during the crisis (we can think of the striking image of the Pope alone in St Peter's Square) and the proposals that are likely to come out of the Vatican COVID-19 Commission that the Pope has set up.

Dr Ivereigh, a Fellow in Contemporary Church History at Campion Hall, Oxford, has been described as "the most astute historian of the pontificate of Pope Francis" and his recent book Wounded Shepherd charts the Pope's six year struggle to bring about reform in the Church.

  • Prayer of Pope Francis

    Let us pray.

    Almighty and merciful God,

    behold our sorrowful condition:

comfort your children and open our hearts to hope,

so that we might feel your Fatherly

    presence in our midst.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

    R. Amen.

  • The Storm at Sea: Mark 4:35-41

With the coming of evening that same day, he said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side." And leaving the crowd behind they took him, just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boats with him. Then it began to blow a gale and the waves were braking into the boat so that it was almost swamped.  But he was in the stern, his head on the cushion, asleep. They woke him and said to him, "Master, do you not care? We are going down!" And he woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Quiet now! Be calm!" And the wind dropped and all was calm again. Then he said to them, "Why are you so frightened? How is it that you have no faith?" They were filed with awe and said to one another, "Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him."

  • Prayer of Pope Francis

Lord, may you bless the world, give health to our bodies and comfort our hearts. You ask us not to be afraid. Yet our faith is weak and we are fearful. But you, Lord, will not leave us at the mercy of the storm. Tell us again: “Do not be afraid” (Mt 28:5). And we, together with Peter, “cast all our anxieties onto you, for you care about us” (cf 1Pet 5:7).
