The Community Vows to Stay

At a recent meeting the Belmont community took the far reaching decision to remain at Belmont Abbey. They intend to develop their pastoral work and retreat work, together with the popular facilities at Hedley Lodge, despite the need for extensive repairs to the Abbey buildings and the present lack of vocations to the monastic life.

Abbot Paul Stonham said "As a sign of our commitment to Belmont and Herefordshire, we have recently carried out an extensive survey of the monastic buildings. We are delighted that Hugo Mason has produced an excellent piece of work which will enable us to identify the most urgent repair work and plan for the future conservation of this historic site".

The cost of the work to conserve the Abbey church and monastery is estimated at over £1 million. A group of people drawn from the monastic community, parish and past pupils of the Abbey School will be working together in order to raise the money.

The Abbot added "This is an important moment in the history of Belmont and the community is united in its desire to build for the future with the help of our friends and benefactors".
